Definition through a name...

  • Trying to choose a name for a blog is a lot like trying to choose a name for your child.  You go over every possible situation that child, or blog, could potentially be in one day and then say the name aloud, over and over and over again, trying to see if it fits that possible, albeit made-up, situation.  The tricky part with a blog name however, is that unlike a child, if the name is already taken well then, you are out of luck.  There are no repeats and instead you are required to come up with something completely authentic and original...talk about pressure!  Not only that, but you have to think long and hard about what it is you want to write about week in and week out.  What's going to hold my interest?  What's going to hold my reader's interest, assuming I get more than just my mom reading this? (Hi Mom!).  So here I have been for the past few weeks trying to not only "out-clever" myself coming up with a name for this blog, but also define what it is I want to write about.
  •      This morning, as I sat in my living room listening to the rain, my fingers danced across the keyboard and typed in the words; One OM at a Time.   My initial thought was simple...maybe even boring to cliché.  I then went to Google for inspiration and just typed in the word OM.  Here is what my first search came up with:

  • Om is a mantra, or vibration, that is traditionally chanted at the beginning and end of yoga sessions. Coming from Hinduism and Yoga, the mantra is considered to have high spiritual and creative power but despite this, it is a mantra that can be recited by anyone.

Ok great, I am a yogi and yoga teacher so I completely relate to this and have a full appreciation and respect for this definition.  I love that it says that it has high spiritual and creative power...totally on board with that. Plus I love Yoga.  So was my aim to have a yoga blog?  A super powerful, life altering, inspirational and spiritual blog?  Does that mean that I can't talk about wanting to have babies, and food, and my dog, and my marriage, and my favorite products (imagining Oprah's favorite things)?
  •  Then I scrolled down to the next listing on google which is a huffpost article written by Valerie Reiss entitled "The meaning of OM".  In the second paragraph, this is what I read:

Turns out, a lot -- and yet, like many spiritual (and especially yogic) things, it's not so easy to define. "It's big. Om is nebulous, and it's vague. It can mean almost anything," says Yoganand Michael Carroll, dean of the Kripalu School of Yoga.

YES!  Much like this blog,  the word/sound of OM,  is not so easy to define.  Maybe that is not such a bad thing?  Maybe it just is what it is and that is ok.  Perhaps what I am dealing with is my insane need to want to define everything all the time and to constantly have the answers, but sometimes, well, we just don't.  I know that I want to write and I know that I have a lot to say.  I know that I want to be up to big things in my life and on this blog and I also know that I am open to possibilities...all of them.  So really this tiny word with this enormously vast meaning is perfect for this blog.  I am a yogi, a writer, a wife, a mama (currently just to our pug), a daughter, a sister, a friend, a lover of food, stories and life.  Just like any of us, I hold a lot of titles and a lot of interests and yet not one of them by themselves can ever fully define me.  Even more importantly than that, I'm not sure that a definition is even required.  So let me just take this one OM at a time. One Big, Nebulous, Anything is possible idea at a time, and just see what happens....
